Olive leaf is a traditional medicinal herb, and its therapeutic uses date all the way back to many centuries ago. We find early references to the use of olive leaf as medicine in the Bible, “The fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.” (Ezekiel 47:12)
In traditional Moroccan medicine, an infusion of olive leaf has been consumed to stabilize blood sugar and control diabetes. And, this use has been corroborated in published scientific studies. One of the primary compounds in olive leaf, a substance called oleuropein, has undoubtedly attracted scientific attention as far back as the early 1900’s.
Do you know that oleuropein exhibits extraordinary antiviral activity (antibacterial and antifungal too), and it’s incredibly helpful for fighting against various types of internal infections? As well, oleuropein increases the body’s production of thermogenin (a substance that helps us to burn fat more efficiently). In early scientific studies, oleuropein demonstrated blood pressure-lowering properties. Research conducted in Milan has shown that this particular compound is a potent antioxidant (inhibiting the oxidation of lipids in the blood and lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease). In fact, the antioxidant activity of olive leaf is even higher than that of green tea!
Olive leaf is an especially good source of the anti-cancer compounds apigenin and luteolin, and it’s a noteworthy source of the anti-malarial agent of cinchonine. Regarded as somewhat of a “tonic cure-all” in ancient times, olive leaf certainly appears to promote better health overall and it assists in warding off a variety of serious health disorders. Even though the leaf of the olive tree is far less well-known than the fruits of the tree and the precious oil derived from them, a steadily growing body of science points to the leaf as highly valuable and definitely worthy of its ancient medicinal reputation.
